When you pay someone who has a fictitious name or “do business as” name you should write the check payable to the dba. A dba can be associated with any type of legal entity. A corporation may have a dba as well as a sole proprietor. Most dba’s are associated with a dba. The term dba refers to the name the business operates such as John Smith doing business as Johns Specialty Plumbing. John Smith should have a bank account with his valid dba and thus the dba is the appropriate payee.
