There are many variables to estimate opening a bar or restaurant. For a bar you need a liquor license and it may or may not even be available. Some liquor licenses can be hundreds of thousands of dollars. This will greatly affect your estimate. Where your restaurant is located will also impact expenses. New York City versus Helena Montana for leading or buying the property will vary greatly. The type of restaurant will effect cost as well. A taco stand versus a high end seafood restaurant will require more equipment, more tables and supplies, a bigger kitchen, a chef versus a teenage cook, working capital to get you started and a grand opening to get people to your spot are all considerations in estimating costs. Inventory for a full premium bar versus a beer only or nonalcoholic restaurant will again affect the estimate.

A corporation may have a dba as well as a sole proprietor. Most dba’s are associated with a dba. The term dba refers to the name the business operates such as John Smith doing business as Johns Specialty Plumbing. John Smith should have a bank account with his valid dba and thus the dba is the appropriate payee.

All monies earned by the sole proprietor and all expenses are listed on his schedule C. Any money you take out of the business is a draw. You cannot deduct the expenses for yourself. You may want to form a corporation or a limited liability company if applicable based upon your profession (Some States do not allow you to become an LLC for various occupations). By forming a corporation you protect your personal assets. You can form a one person corporation and be an employee. As an employee you pay yourself a fair salary which is subject to social security and other payroll taxes. Other profits that are distributed are dividends. Dividends are not subject to social security and payroll taxes. In a sole proprietorship those profits are subject to the self-employment tax .

There are a number of variables to opening a restaurant. You need a location and you need to know if you will lease or buy the property. Once you determine your location you need to determine if the construction will be quick because it was a former restaurant or has the ability to be laid out with easy construction or if you need to add or knock down walls. You need to determine the suppliers of everything from tables, tablecloths and food suppliers. Certain items may be custom made and take months and some will be available immediately so this will affect the time to open, After location and buildout you will need signage which can take time, you may need to borrow funds which will impact how long to open as well. Some loans can take 6 months or longer to get funded and you may need those funds to open. The type of food served and ambiance will also affect your time to open. A quick serve hamburger restaurant may open quickly whereas a high end restauarant with a world reknowned chef may take a year or more to locate. Employees and training take time too. Permits are another issue too. The health department will need to certify you as well as a certificate of occupancy after buildout. These are some of the issues you will need to address

Hey Razaly,
I think it is possible. It depends on the area that you are talking about. The regulations are different in each state and country. In general though I feel it would normally take five or six months with all the planning and permit processes.
